Description
Available today, with domestic shipping in NYC metro area included, This Brazilian Modern Set of 4 Dining Chairs in hardwood and Leather by Sergio Rodrigues is nothing less than gorgeous!
Each of these four chairs showcases a solid hardwood structure upholstered in light brown leather, characterized by its almost brutalist aesthetic. Originally designed for Bloch Editors, a prominent Brazilian publishing and broadcasting conglomerate, these chairs were part of the modern furniture commissioned for Bloch’s headquarters in Sao Paulo. Crafted by renowned designers Sergio Rodrigues and Joaquim Tenreiro, they reflect a distinctive blend of style and functionality.
The chairs have been reupholstered in a similar light brown color, maintaining the original faux leatherette's design lineage. The hardwood frames have been refinished, highlighting vibrant wood veins while showing minor signs of age, particularly on the legs. Overall, the set is in excellent condition, with many chairs still bearing Bloch’s heritage plaques on the backrests.
This set is another example of the awesome furniture work in Brazil between the 40-70's decades. A set like this will look great in any type of environment, from mid-century to contemporary and modern design.
Abou the Designer:
Sergio Rodrigues was a Brazilian furniture designer and architect. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1927, he studied architecture and worked in various design fields before founding his own furniture company in the 1950s.
Rodrigues was known for using traditional Brazilian materials like wood and leather in his furniture designs, which gave his pieces a distinctly Brazilian aesthetic. He also drew inspiration from Brazilian culture and history, incorporating elements like the curving lines of Brazilian architecture and the colors and patterns of indigenous art. Additionally, he often looked to the natural beauty of Brazil for inspiration, using organic shapes and textures in his designs. Overall, Rodrigues's work reflected his deep appreciation for his country's rich cultural heritage and unique artistic traditions.
Some of his most famous pieces include the Mole and the Oscar armchairs. Rodrigues's work helped to establish Brazilian modernism as a prominent design movement, and he continued to create innovative furniture designs throughout his career. He passed away in 2014 at the age of 86. -
