Description
Pair of German silver Renaissance hunting figures, ca 1890. The man wears doublet over baggy chemise and hose with belt hanging loosely around hips. A long hat feather drapes gracefully along his arm. The horn is raised expectantly while the other hand rests on his sword. The woman wears a bodice-revealing fitted hip-length coat over a pleated skirt. Her braids are coiled in the back and her hat sports a jaunty feather. On a raised arm perches a falcon. The figures stand on rocky mounds with scattered vegetation; at the man’s feet lurks a lion, bear, and gryphon. Heads detachable.
Both figures after works by Antonin Marie Moine (1796-1849), a French sculptor who worked in the Romantic Troubadour style. The figures here are based on Le Sonneur d’Olifant and La Dame au Faucon. The former was first produced in the early 1830s, and remained popular throughout the 19th century. Typically sold as bronze casts, these are rare silver versions.
Hanau marks. Very good condition with deep patina.
