Untitled - Black, Rust, Purple and Blue Color Field Oil Painting
-
Description
This work by Martin Canin is a 20 x 26 inch horizontal color-field oil painting from the 80s. Color is freed from objective context and becomes the subject in itself. The painting is on panel and the main colors are black and orange. Though at first it would be easy to assimilate Canin's paintings to the work of color field artists like Barnett Newman or Jack Bush, Canin’s large oil paint canvases maintain a distinctive lyrical aspect that separate them from pure geometry and plunge them into a subtle psychological realm. His captivating use of color juxtaposition and ever changing geometries creates compositions of a rare intensity. Often, the structure of Canin's work is in between hard edge and color field paintings, like for this small work. Though the lines of his geometries are well identified, Canin emphasize them with softened, fading lines. This procedure gives to the work a breathing emphasis, permeating the geometric abstraction with an emotional perception.
Canin states, "My work has gone through many changes in the more than forty years that I have been painting. Manet’s statement still resonates for me: To be concise in art is both necessary and elegant. Luminosity is still the goal, oil paint on canvas still the preferred medium, shape and color still the plastic means to speak my particular expression."
Born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1927, Martin Canin is firmly rooted in the New York School of Abstract Expressionism. He received his major art training at Syracuse University, where he was awarded the B.F.A. in 1951. In 1959 he went to Tokyo, Japan, where he had his first one-man show in 1960. At the end of the 60s he started teaching at the Parsons School of Design.
His work is part of the Tate Gallery and the Yale University Art Gallery's permanent collection, and it has been exhibited in Europe, Japan and the United States, including several one-man shows at the historic Graham Gallery at 1014 Madison Avenue, NY.
