The Squares that Define - Abstract Versus Figurative Painting in Blue and Yellow
-
Description
Parris Jaru’s The Square that Define is a richly textured composition that blends abstraction with a quiet architectural logic. Saturated tones of cobalt blue, golden ochre, and white are layered and scraped, revealing both vibrant energy and deliberate structure. The interplay of shapes—reminiscent of walls, thresholds, or urban silhouettes—suggests a space being simultaneously built and deconstructed. The title evokes the act of delineation, of defining identity or territory, while the painterly surface resists containment, bleeding color beyond the borders of form. Jaru’s use of palette knife and pigment produces a tactile rhythm that rewards close inspection, imbuing the canvas with a sense of place without prescribing one. With this work, Jaru continues to explore the language of abstraction as a tool for introspection, memory, and spatial reimagining—marking not just visual boundaries, but emotional ones.
