Carolyn Gassan Plochmann

Carolyn Gassan Plochmann (1917-2010) was an American art historian and museum curator. She was born in New York City and studied at Vassar College and the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University.
 
Plochmann worked as a curator at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York from 1947 to 1968, where she helped to organize numerous exhibitions and acquisitions of modern art. She was particularly interested in the work of American abstract expressionist painters, and she played a key role in establishing the museum's collection of this important artistic movement.
 
In 1968, Plochmann left MoMA to become the director of the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, where she continued to champion the work of modern and contemporary artists. She also taught art history at Brandeis and at other institutions, including Harvard University.
 
Throughout her career, Plochmann wrote extensively about modern and contemporary art, contributing to numerous exhibition catalogs and scholarly publications. She was widely respected for her expertise and contributions to the field of art history and museum studies.
