Charles Bevan
British
Charles Bevan (c. 1815–1891) was a prominent English cabinetmaker, woodcarver, and furniture designer celebrated for his Gothic Revival creations in the mid‑19th century. Born in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, Bevan moved to London, where he became noted for intricate medieval-inspired designs. He worked with prestigious firms such as Marsh, Jones & Cribb, Gillows, James Lamb, and Hindley & Sons, and designed ornate suites for prominent clients like Titus Salt. In 1872, he partnered with his son George Alfred as “C. Bevan & Son,” continuing the production of richly carved, marquetry-enhanced furniture. Examples of his work are held in institutions like the Victoria & Albert Museum and former country estates of industrial magnates. His legacy lies in masterful craftsmanship, historicist elegance, and the revival of Gothic and geometric styles in Victorian furniture.
