Soriana Sofa by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Cassina, Italy, 1970s
-
Description
The Soriana sofa, designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Cassina in the early 1970s, is one of the most celebrated icons of Italian postmodern design. Conceived as an innovative departure from traditional sofa construction, Soriana was awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1970 for its groundbreaking approach to form and comfort.
This three-seat example, upholstered in rich brown leather, exemplifies the collection’s sculptural presence, with its generous proportions secured by chromed steel clamps. Its low, fluid silhouette remains strikingly contemporary, while the visible relationship between leather and steel reflects the Scarpas’ exploration of structure and material. The present example is proportioned as a three-seater, offering ample seating without compromising the sofa’s iconic, flowing form. The leather remains in excellent condition, displaying a warm, even patina that enhances its depth and texture. -
