Aesthetic Movement Scalloped Top Faux-Bamboo Table
-
Description
English Aesthetic Movement faux-bamboo table with a deeply scalloped or clover leaf-shaped top, decorated with painted birds, flowers and foliage on a background of black, brown, amber and rust, creating a striking contrast against the naturalistic bamboo style frame. A five-sided lower shelf is similarly decorated. There are five legs ending in splay feet. The overall form captures the movements fascination with Japanese-inspired motifs.
This movement refers to the European and American artistic trend of the late 19th century characterized by the incorporation of Japanese art and design into Western art. This influence stemmed from the increased trade and cultural exchange between Japan and the West following the opening of Japan in the mid-19th century. -
