Paavo Tynell (Attr.) Model "1667" Ceiling Lamp for Idman, Finland 1930s

$ 3,325
  • Description
    The 1930s marked a transformative period for lighting design, when Nordic, in particular Finnish designers sought to merge the crisp functionality of modernism with the softness and warmth of ambient light. Among the most influential figures was Paavo Tynell, deemed “the man who illuminated Finland”. His work, which combining understated forms with masterful precision helped shape the region’s reputation for refined, timeless lighting.

    This model “1667” ceiling lamp, produced for Idman in the mid-1930s, encapsulates these ideals beautifully. Its rounded glass shade, with its soft curvature, diffuses light in a gentle and inviting way, while ensuring elegance and versatility. The unique characteristic of this shade is the combination of two glass-work techniques, displaying both translucent frosted glass and opaque milk glass. Suspended from a slender nickel-plated stem and sleek ceiling mount, the lamp floats gracefully with its light form, while being securely anchored. The absence of ornament speaks to the modernist ethos, while the tactile variety of the glass give the piece charm and individuality. Its effortless appeal and timeless materials allow it to bring the clarity of Nordic design into both contemporary and vintage spaces.

    Today, the model “1667” remains as relevant as when it was created, embodying the enduring power of Finnish design. More than a lamp, it is a testament of an iconic era when creativity helped redefine modern living.
