"Grand Repos" Armchair in Black Stained Oak, France 20th Century
-
Description
The collaboration of Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron was destined to be as influential as it is prolific. As this armchair testifies, Votre Maison - the duo’s own company - left an indelible stamp on the design of the 1950s, 60s and 70s thanks to the visual and material quality and distinctiveness of their works.
The armchair has an open oaken construction, featuring masterfully carved elements. This chair shows the designers’ focus was both keenly attuned to functionality — furniture’s use in daily life — and to the creation of innovative design. From Guillerme et Chambron’s trademark oak frame to the sculptural legs, arms and backrest, this piece is characteristic of their unique style, while also featuring details that are one-of-a-kind. The elegant and luxurious upholstery of the seat and round back cushion beautifully compliment the dark oak frame. The fabric not only boasts an eye-catching colour but also offers a tactile experience, allowing the chair to be as comfortable as it is stylish. The back cushion is secured with loops that encompass the back spindles, ensuring that it stays in position. The bottom consists of another cushion framed by the carved wooden armrests which extend to the front legs. The woodworking truly shows the overall quality of this chair, the frame is refined and the attention to the smallest detail highlights the design and manufacturing skills of Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron.
This model visually represents the very reason Votre Maison, the French duo’s company, significantly influenced French design history. Votre Maison produced over two thousand models during the latter half of the twentieth century, and its output also served as a model for a vast field of livable design in France.
