Description
Large Modern sterling silver picture frame, ca 1975. Plain and flat surround. With glass, silk lining, and wood laminate back and hinged easel support for portrait (vertical) display.
On top rail, enameled seal for the “Vice President of the United States”. A gift to the previous owner's uncle from Nelson Rockefeller, who was vice president from 1974 to 1977. It was the culmination of his political career which began as assistant secretary of state under Franklin Roosevelt. From 1959 to 1973 he was governor of New York State. His presidential ambitions were frustrated not only because he had a reputation for swinging (ideological and otherwise) but because he represented the liberal wing of the Republican party at a time when the robust ideas of Goldwater and Reagan were in the ascendancy.
A one-of-a-kind gift for the Rockefeller Republican in your life.
Fully marked including maker’s (Lebkuecher) and retailer’s (Cartier) stamps, and no. 431. Very good condition. Dimensions: Frame: H 15 1/4 x W 12 3/8 in. Window: H 13 3/8 x W 10 1/2 in. #CC452 -
