This is a very rare early or prototype Z table lamp by Louis Kalff for Philips, The Netherlands. An iconic mid century design.

However, this is not a normal Z lamp. This is a very early or even prototype model from the mid fifties. There are several details different to what a normal Z lamp would have looked. The black lacquered base rod is fully lacquered - this is known to be a feature of the very early models. Later models would have a brass part in the middle of the rod. Also, the brass stretcher connected with the black rod has a rounded shape - later models had a more square looking brass stretcher.

But the list goes on: the power cable comes out of a different place and the brass plate on the shade has no Philips logo. It looks like this lamp was made when the design of this iconic Z lamp was not completely finished yet. Which makes it something very special and highly rare.

This model is officially called the Decora or the L 588 FD, but is known as the Z lamp because of it’s Z shaped frame. Our Z shows a really great patina on both the brass frame and the shade. In our opinion this only adds to the charm of this iconic design.
