Description
EBONIZED TOOLED-LEATHER BUREAU PLAT IN THE NEOCLASSICAL TASTE
France, circa 1940
Attributed to Maurice Hirsch
29 1/2" H x 27 1/2" D x 51" W; knee clearance is 23 3/4" from ground to underside of drawer
A fine Neoclassical bureau plat designed in the French Louis XVI taste during the Hollywood Regency era, it features a pair of dovetailed drawers set within a simple apron while the writing surface projects softly over all sides, this retaining its original cognac patinated gilt-tooled leather writing surface. The drawers are hung with gilt-bronze mounts and ring pulls and are framed with gilt trim; the corners of the desk have applied bronze ribbed moldings over tapered and fluted legs that terminate in turned sabots. A very fine streamlined desk.
The same desk marked "M. Hirsch" was carried in the inventory of Maison Cedric of Paris, France (offered at the time for 16,000 EUR or $ 19,124 USD and since sold). The present example has no maker markings.
Condition: Old finish with historical wear to lacquer and ebonizing, abrading and surface history. Fabulous patinated cognac leather writing surface with scuffs, scratches and other marks. Mounts discolored. Very good vintage condition, ready to place.
