Description
This set of six Gustavian “Smiling Chairs” dates to circa 1800 and represents a classic form within Swedish decorative arts. The chairs feature the distinctive arched, open splat backs that give the model its “smiling” nickname, combining lightness of form with strong architectural balance.
The frames have been repainted in a soft bluish-gray, a restrained palette that complements the elegant silhouette while respecting the period character. The seats are newly upholstered in linen, offering a clean, neutral contrast to the painted wood. Slender, straight legs and well-proportioned stretchers provide stability without visual heaviness, making the chairs suitable for both dining and occasional seating.
Produced in Sweden in the early 19th century, these chairs reflect the Gustavian emphasis on clarity, symmetry, and functional refinement. Minor wear consistent with age remains visible beneath the painted surface and contributes to their authentic patina. This cohesive set works equally well in traditional interiors or more pared-back, contemporary settings that favor timeless Scandinavian design.
