Mark Catesby

British, 1679 - 1749
Mark Catesby (1683-1749) was an English naturalist and artist who is best known for his monumental work "The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands," which was published in two volumes between 1731 and 1743. This work was the first comprehensive study of the flora and fauna of the southeastern United States, and is considered one of the most important works on American natural history.

Catesby traveled to the American colonies twice, in 1712-1719 and again in 1722-1726, where he made extensive observations of the local flora and fauna. He collected specimens and made detailed sketches and watercolor paintings of the plants, animals, and birds he encountered, which he used as the basis for his illustrations in his book.

Catesby's work was significant not only for its scientific value, but also for its artistic merit. His illustrations are highly detailed and accurate, and are considered some of the finest examples of natural history illustration from the 18th century.

Catesby's work had a profound influence on the development of natural history illustration and the study of American natural history. His illustrations were widely copied and influenced the work of later naturalists and artists, including John James Audubon. Catesby is remembered as one of the most important naturalists of the 18th century and his work remains an important reference for scientists and artists today.
