Peter Beard
American, 1938 - 2020
Peter Beard (1938-2020) was an American photographer, artist, and writer. He is best known for his photographs of African wildlife and his exploration of the relationship between humans, nature, and wildlife. Beard was born in New York City and began taking photographs as a teenager. He studied at Yale University, where he was mentored by the photographer and designer, Josef Albers.
Throughout his career, Beard traveled extensively throughout Africa, documenting the landscapes, wildlife, and people he encountered. He often incorporated his photographs into mixed-media collages, combining them with found objects, text, and paint. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, and he published numerous books throughout his career, including "The End of the Game" and "Zara's Tales." Beard was a passionate conservationist and environmental activist, and he used his art to raise awareness about the need to protect endangered species and the natural world. He passed away in 2020 at the age of 82.
