Now in its thirteenth year, Art Basel Miami Beach is back and bigger than ever. The fair, which opens to the public on Thursday, December 4, at the Miami Beach Convention Center, is complemented by an array of cultural events, including satellite fairs, gallery exhibitions, public installations, and posh parties. In total, about 1,000 exhibitors will flock to sunny Florida to participate in the shows and attendance at Art Basel Miami Beach is expected to reach upward of 75,000 visitors.

Art Basel Miami Beach, the country’s biggest contemporary art fair, will open with an invitation-only Private View on Wednesday, December 3, followed by an exclusive Vernissage early on Thursday. 267 galleries presenting $3 billion worth of art will participate in the show. Among the most anticipated offerings are paintings by Christopher Wool and Jean-Michel Basquiat, both presented by Christophe Van de Weghe (New York), a portrait of Mao Zedong by Andy Warhol from Acquavella Galleries (New York), a David Hockney landscape from Pace Gallery (New York/London), a colorful diptych by Frank Stella from Mnuchin Gallery (New York), and a selection of works by Alberto Burri, Richard Serra, and Keith Haring from Dominique Levy (New York/London). The Survey sector of the fair will feature thirteen galleries presenting historically-themed art projects, including a monographic retrospective of the American Precisionist Ralston Crawford presented by Menconi + Schoelkopf (New York) and an exhibition of works by outsider artists Henry Darger and Marcel Storr presented by Edlin Gallery (New York). The fair’s Public sector, which features works by Georg Baselitz, Ugo Rondinone, Yinka Shonibare MBE, and others, will be installed in nearby Collins Park.

Among the twenty-plus satellite fairs that will coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach is Design Miami, which presents museum-quality exhibitions of twentieth and twenty-first century furniture, lighting, and objets d’art. Design Miami exhibitors include Hostler Burrows (New York), dealers of Scandinavian and American design of the twentieth century; Johnson Trading Gallery (New York), which is committed to commissioning and funding unique contemporary works from emerging designers, artists, and architects; Magen H Gallery (New York), which specializes in French post-war designers; Moderne Gallery (Philadelphia), dealers of twentieth-century decorative arts, with a primary focus on the American Craft and Studio Movement; and R & Company (New York), which specializes in unique and rare vintage works by designers such as Wendell Castle, Greta Magnusson Grossman, and the Haas Brothers.

Each year, Design Miami collaborates with institutions, partners, and sponsors to present newly commissioned works of design, including immersive installations, curated exhibitions, and unique objects that celebrate design innovation. This year’s collaborations include an American Northwest-inspired Collectors Lounge designed by Seattle-based architecture firm Olson Kundig Architects; a leather-and-fur bedecked Roman Lounge designed by fair sponsor Fendi and the Italian design duo Dimore Studio; an immersive installation commissioned by sponsor Swarovski and created by architect Jeanne Gang and filmmaker and nature photographer James Balog; and an installation by the Vienna-based duo mischer’traxler, which was commissioned by another sponsor, the Champagne producer Perrier-Jouët. Design Miami will also include a Jonathan Muecke-designed pavilion and a Design Visionary Award honoring architect Peter Marino. Marino will also be the subject of an exhibition celebrating his multiple roles within the world of design. A stand-alone display space designed by the architect will feature antique and contemporary chairs from his collection, architectural maquettes and images, and his series of cast bronze boxes.

Art Basel Miami Beach will remain open to the public through Sunday, December 7. Design Miami, which is held adjacent to the Miami Beach Convention Center, kicks off with an invitation-only Preview Day on Tuesday, December 2, and will be open to the public from Wednesday, December 3, through Sunday, December 7.
