Everett Gee Jackson (1900-1995) “Modernism Without Apologies”
On view until November 19th, 2016
Hirschl & Adler Galleries
The Crown Building, 730 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY
Born in Texas at the turn of the 20th century, Everett Gee Jackson was an exceptional painter, professor at San Diego State University, and a pillar of his community. Though he is a regional celebrity, he remains little known outside of San Diego and Texas, even though his work served as the first major conduit for the introduction of Mexican modernism into American art. His work rarely surfaces on the art market. Once described as “sturdy modernism” by critics of his time, Jackson’s work was heavily influenced by los tres grandes, Diego Rivera, Jose Orozco, and David Siqueiros. “Modernism Without Apologies” features 18 paintings that will be on view through November 19th, 2016.

Crosscurrents: The Colonies, Clubs & Schools that Established Impressionism in America
Through December 31, 2016
Vose Galleries LLC, 238 Newbury Street, Boston MA, 02116
617-536-6176
Vose Galleries in Boston has announced a major upcoming exhibition, Crosscurrents: The Colonies, Clubs & Schools that Established Impressionism in America. This show is the second of two significant exhibitions in 2016 to commemorate the galleries’ 175th anniversary, and will be on exhibition from through December 31. Crosscurrents will showcase the extensive art collection of Abbot W. and Marcia L. Vose, which has never been displayed in its entirety before. In the 1970s and early 1980s, Abbot (Bill) Vose gave dozens of lectures around the country on the artists working in the colonies, clubs and schools that brought American Impressionism to light. His advocacy of the Impressionist movement helped catalyze the scholarly and public recognition that American Impressionism receives today. Crosscurrents will feature more than 100 works for sale by American Impressionist artists active around the turn of the century. The exhibition will also explore the tightly knit summer communities where artists formed a distinctly American style, such as Gloucester, Rockport and Cape Cod in Massachusetts, and Cos Cob, Old Lyme and Mystic in Connecticut.

PHILADELPHIA
World War I and American Art
November 4, 2016 – April 9, 2017
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA
Opening Reception: November 3, 6:30 - 8:00pm
As we approach the centenary of America’s involvement with "the war to end all wars," World War I and American Art will be the first exhibition devoted to exploring the ways in which American artists responded to World War I. This unprecedented event impacted virtually every aspect of life, including art and culture. 160 works by 80 American artists will be exhibited, many of whom were directly involved in the war as soldiers, relief workers, political dissenters, and official war artists. Arranged around eight different themes that follow the narrative of the war, this exhibition will incorporate the wide range of perspectives, styles, reactions and experiences that these artists had as they perceived these events and translated them into their work.
