Diego Rivera

Diego Rivera (1886-1957) was a Mexican painter and muralist, known for his large-scale murals that depicted scenes from Mexican history, everyday life, and social and political issues. He was strongly influenced by the Mexican Revolution and the indigenous cultures of Mexico, and combined elements of European modernism with traditional Mexican art forms in his work. Rivera was politically active and a member of the Mexican Communist Party, using his art as a means of promoting social and political change. Some of his most famous works include his murals at the National Preparatory School and the Ministry of Education building in Mexico City, as well as at the Detroit Institute of Arts in the United States. Rivera was married to artist Frida Kahlo, and their relationship was tumultuous but influential in their art.
