Two Major Art, Antique & Design Shows Open in Los Angeles
On Wednesday, January 14, 2015, The LA Art Show and the Los Angeles Jewelry, Antique & Design Show will kick-off at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Both shows are presented by the Palm Beach Show Group, the producers of a swath of the art and design industry’s most celebrated events, including the Palm Beach Jewelry, Art & Antique Show; The Chicago International Art, Antique & Jewelry Show; The Baltimore Summer Antiques Show; and The Dallas International Art, Antique & Jewelry Show.
Now in its twentieth year, the LA Art Show presents modern, contemporary, historic, and traditional works of art, including sculptures, installations, and works on paper. The show, which welcomed over 50,000 art enthusiasts last year, will bring together over 120 galleries from 22 countries. The show has sparked several global art trends thanks to its long-standing dedication to featuring international exhibitors as well as showcasing the work of both established and emerging artists. In recent years, the LA Art Show has become the most internationally diverse art platform in the Western world, bringing in the largest groupings of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese galleries outside of Asia. Participants in the 2015 LA Art Show include Arader Galleries, M.S. Rau Antiques, Rehs Galleries, the Tolman Collection of Tokyo, and Other Criteria.
The LA Art Show will include a lecture series entitled Dialogs LA. The series provokes discussion to enhance creativity, touching on a range of topics, including the political and cultural impact of art and design, the business of art and the international marketplace, and the latest art trends and movements. Highlights from the 2015 program include a presentation of the Bice Bugatti Art Prize by Luigi Rossi, Director of the Bugatti Foundation; a discussion on the state of public art in Los Angeles with artist El Mac and Actor Cheech Marin; and an in-depth overview of Tansaekhwa, the most significant Contemporary Korean art movement.
Dialogs LA will begin on January 15, with Designer Thursday, featuring design-centric lectures and special exhibits, including “The Art of Design and the Home as Art,” a conversation about the collaborative efforts that make the relationship between art, design, and home relevant. Panelists include real estate agent Paul Lester of The Agency Partner; Stephen Levine, the Creative Director of Furniture at Rose Tarlow; the Los Angeles-based art advisor John Wolf; and Hoojung Lee, the Director of the Art All Ways gallery. Designer Thursday will also include a lecture led by author Jared Goss, which will take an in-depth look at some of the most colorful figures from the roster of international clients who commissioned high-style French Art Deco interiors during the 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s. The lecture is inspired by Goss’ recently published book, French Art Deco, a catalogue of nearly one hundred pieces from The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s modern design collection.
The LA Art Show will run in conjunction with the second edition of the Los Angeles Jewelry, Antique & Design Show. Featuring unique gems, designer jewelry and watches, vintage couture purses, antique and modern silver, Asian art, textiles, books, porcelain, tribal art, furnishings, and tribal art and artifacts, the Los Angeles Jewelry, Antique & Design Show is curated to meet the palates of private collectors, museum curators, interior designers, and luxury enthusiasts. Exhibitors include Jacob’s Diamond & Estate Jewelry, Lillian Nassau, LLC, and Provident Jewelry.
The LA Art Show’s opening night premiere party will take place on Wednesday, January 14, 2015. Hosted by actors Amy Adams and Darren Le Gallo, the event will benefit the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The Los Angeles Jewelry, Antique & Design Show will also host an opening night premiere party on Wednesday. The event, which benefits the FIDM Museum Fashion Council, will include a “first look” at the show’s curated exhibit showcasing couture fashion, "Collecting Style/Making History: The Helen Larson Historic Fashion Collection."
Organized by FIDM Museum Curator Kevin Jones, the exhibit will feature select pieces from the collection that includes more than 1,400 pieces of clothing and accessories dating from the 1600s to the 1930s, assembled by Southern Californian Helen Larson between 1946 and 1996. Highlights from the collection include an early-seventeenth-century Italian jerkin, eighteenth-century cloth-of-silver and gold garments, nineteenth-century haute couture, and many ensembles with royal provenance, including over thirty objects worn by Queen Victoria. The collection includes Helen Larson's personal correspondence with eminent fashion curators and dealers, and purchase records.
