André Arbus

French, 1903 - 1969
Born in 1903 in Toulouse, André Arbus was immersed in the world of fine furniture from an early age, helping with his family’s business that specialized in 18th-century-style reproductions. Initially studying law at the École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr, Arbus soon shifted paths and enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse, where he studied sculpture under Henri Parayre. After completing his studies, he became the artistic director of the family firm, ushering in a new era that moved beyond traditional copies toward modern French design. Arbus focused on craftsmanship, comfort, and a refined sense of style rooted in French neoclassicism. His influence helped revive neoclassical aesthetics for a new generation, and his legacy endures today through highly sought-after furniture pieces admired around the world.
