André Arbus
French, 1903 - 1969
Born in 1903, André Arbus spent his childhood helping out around his father’s business in Toulouse that traded in 18th century imitation furniture. He studied law at École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr and transferred to École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse where he studied under sculptor Henri Parayre. After graduation, Arbus became the artistic director of the family business and his father retired shortly thereafter. Arbus transitioned the work of the craftsman from traditional reproductions to cutting edge designs. He focused on comfort, quality and the celebration of a distinctly French aesthetic. Today Arbus is remembered as a fine furniture maker and credited with reintroducing neo-classicism design to his generation. André Arbus furniture remains popular worldwide.
