Auguste Herbin
French, 1882
Auguste Herbin (1882-1960) was a French painter and one of the leading figures of the early 20th-century abstraction movement. He was born in Quiévy, France and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lille and the Académie Julian in Paris.
Herbin's early works were influenced by the post-Impressionist movement, but he later moved towards abstraction, creating works that were characterized by bold, geometric shapes and bright, contrasting colors. He was a founding member of the Abstraction-Création group in Paris in 1931, which aimed to promote abstract art and provide a platform for artists working in this style.
Herbin's paintings often explored the relationship between color and form, and he believed that abstraction was a way to achieve a universal language of art that could transcend cultural and linguistic barriers. His work was influenced by a wide range of sources, including mathematics, music, and philosophy.
Some of Herbin's most famous works include his "Planetary" series, which consists of a series of circular paintings inspired by the planets and their movements, and his "Alphabet Plastique" series, which used abstract shapes to represent the letters of the alphabet.
Herbin's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice. He is considered one of the most important abstract artists of the 20th century.
