“When I build with my hands I feel happy and fulfilled; my work signifies lasting quality and integrity. I push boundaries, chase new technology, and focus on sustainability. I want to challenge the art form and make my mark using my history in industrial environments.”

Sean Carleton was 15 when his father introduced him to welding; he was immediately hooked. His love for welding, specifically tungsten inert gas welding, fueled him as he grew his technique. Sean later learned woodwork and became deeply interested in using natural sustainable material. He began to put his passions together to form fine furniture. Carleton creates art to satisfy his insatiable need to work with his hands using materials he connects with. He finds inspiration in technology and innovation.

Sean’s unique approach to his medium has been referred to as “elemental art”. His unique style is contemporary and innovative. Sean’s signature technique is using his welding skills as a tool to create intricate pieces of furniture. Each piece is cut, de-burred, tacked together, tungsten inert gas welded, sanded, and finished by hand. Sean takes great pride in his metal and wood finishing. He uses patinas as well as clear finishes to ensure quality. He uses a progressive, environmentally-friendly two-part hardened oil to protect and showcase his woodwork.

Once Sean learned how to weld, he was hooked. He enrolled in Western Washington University with hopes of pursuing a future in renewable energy vehicles. He found work as a hardwood flooring sander and finisher and decided to pursue other avenues. He focused on welding and metallurgy by attending Lake Washington Technical College. He began to weld in Ballard Washington and subsequently overseas in the fishing industry. After focusing on his skills he began to pursue crafting fine furniture as an artistic outlet. He is now a full-time artist and works hard to raise his two beautiful huskies in Bellingham Washington.
