Chimera Watts
South Korean
Featured in Incollect Digital Magazine: Chimera Watts Lights Up Our Lives
Meet Chimera Watts by Sang Pil Bae: Mastering Mechanical Precision and Sublime Aesthetic Design in Industrial Lighting"
Sang Pil Bae is a visionary artist renowned for his meticulous craftsmanship and minimalist design sensibility. With a focus on functionality, adaptability, and durability, Bae's creations transcend the ordinary to become functional art pieces. Working primarily with metals like copper, brass, and stainless steel, Bae transforms these materials into lighting masterpieces that merge form and function.
Chimera Watts, Bae's brainchild founded in 2006 in Seoul, South Korea, is a testament to his creative prowess. At the heart of his collection lie industrial lamps that span a diverse spectrum – from the creations of anonymous machinists to celebrated designers. Each piece undergoes a meticulous restoration process, breathing new life into vintage treasures while preserving their original essence and practicality.
Bae's artistic imagination extends to his "Reconstructions," where vintage materials from various industries converge to form unique, one-of-a-kind lamps and objects. Much like the mythical Chimera, these creations blend elements into harmonious wholes that are as imaginative as they are captivating.
As a luminary in the field, Bae's portfolio is a testament to his creative journey. After relocating to New York at the age of 14, he embarked on diverse studies in political science and oenology, enriching his perspective. In 2006, Chimera Watts was born, alongside his gallery, The Office, in Seoul. With a treasure trove of vintage industrial materials, Bae deftly reimagined and repurposed them into captivating lighting pieces. His work garnered recognition across numerous galleries and museums in Seoul, and he lent his artistic vision to illuminate spaces in restaurants, hotels, theaters, and even the traditional markets of the City of Seoul. Collaborating with architects, interior designers, and fellow artists, Bae's influence expanded further.
In 2012, Bae's creative journey took him to Burgundy, France, where he established an atelier, immersing himself in the rich tapestry of European inspiration. Building on this international experience, he expanded his creative footprint to Hoboken, NJ, in 2019, setting up yet another atelier to continue his exploration of the intersection between art and industrial design.
Sang Pil Bae's work transcends borders, eras, and expectations, forging a unique path in the realm of industrial lighting. His fusion of mechanical precision and artistic vision continues to illuminate spaces and inspire minds around the world.
