Design Institute America / DIA
American, 1971
Established by Robert Cameron Winzeler, Jr., Design Institute America traces its roots back to 1971 when it emerged as a rebranding of Winzeler's Acme Metal Products. Renowned for its contemporary and transitional furnishings and embellishments, the company boasts a rich legacy in the realm of interior design.
Following his tenure in college and military service as a first lieutenant in the Air Material Command from 1955 to 1957, Winzeler returned to Montpelier and became part of the family enterprise, Winzeler Stamping. This business specialized in crafting bespoke metal stamping components for various industries, including home furnishings. By 1970, Winzeler had ascended to the roles of CEO and chairman. Although he stepped down from the CEO position in 1997, he retained the title of chairman.
A true entrepreneur at heart, Winzeler established Winzeler Pacific, Winzeler South, and Acme Metal Products, the latter metamorphosing into Design Institute America in 1971. Notably, designer Rick Lee, who clinched a table design competition sponsored by Design Institute America in the late 1980s, acknowledged Winzeler's pivotal role in fostering opportunities for furniture designers. Lee remarked, "He provided numerous wonderful opportunities for countless designers and artists."
Design Institute America has collaborated with various designers over the years to create its renowned furniture pieces. Some notable designers who have worked with the company include Milo Baughman, Vladimir Kagan, and Rick Lee. These collaborations highlight the company's commitment to innovation and the cultivation of talent within the design industry.
Today, Design Institute America's furniture designs and accents continue to captivate enthusiasts, maintaining a prominent presence in contemporary interior décor.
