Fernweh Woodworking

Fernweh Woodworking began in 2015, and I call my role "Designer/Craftsman" because I cherish both the woodworking and design elements of the company. A former Marine Officer and wildland firefighter with a bachelor's degree in business from Purdue University, I stumbled into what I hope will be a lifelong design & woodworking career. I'm self-taught in both respects, and am inspired by the ethical design philosophy and work of Sam Maloof, and I particularly admire the legacy and designs of Finn Juhl and Hans Wegner.
The first few years of the business I was solely focused on producing smaller home decor and giving myself a crash-course woodworking education. In 2017 I began the process of transitioning fully to in-house furniture design & production, which has quickly become my leading passion.
I view myself as just a beginner woodworker and designer, and to some extent I hope to always feel that way; no matter how much you learn, you should always be overwhelmed and excited by the oceans of things yet to be discovered. I hope to do my small part to keep the craft of woodworking not only alive, but fresh.
