Floyd Elzinga finds inspiration in the overlooked and often discarded elements of nature—rotten stumps, broken branches, invasive species, and ravaged trees. For over 25 years, he has built a career that celebrates these subjects through three-dimensional sculptures, relief work, and environmental installations. His current body of work explores themes such as fractured landscapes, tree portraits, and the aggressive nature of seeds.
Elzinga earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design in Halifax, NS. Initially captivated by steel for its malleability and forgiving qualities, he skillfully employs its diverse colors and the interplay of light on its surface. By integrating traditional metalworking techniques, he creates textures and depth akin to the brushstrokes of a painter.
Now residing near his studio in Beamsville, Ontario, situated on the scenic Niagara Escarpment, Elzinga continues to push the boundaries of his artistic practice, transforming nature’s imperfections into striking works of art.
