François Martin-Kavel (born May 25, 1846, with some sources suggesting 1861 or 1862 – died in 1909 or 1931) was a notable French painter and illustrator, celebrated for his contributions to genre painting and still life. Residing in Paris and later in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Martin-Kavel became renowned for his captivating portraits of women, often portrayed in exotic costumes or alluring states of undress.
His work is characterized by centered compositions, frequently set against dark, dramatic fabric backdrops, creating a theatrical effect reminiscent of spotlight illumination. In addition to his striking portraits, Martin-Kavel also explored still lifes and landscapes, showcasing his versatility as an artist. A prominent figure at the Salon des Artistes Français, he regularly exhibited his work, earning recognition and a medal in 1881 for his artistic achievements.
