Amer's work is characterized by her exploration of gender, sexuality, and femininity. She is known for her large-scale canvases that combine painting with embroidery, using brightly colored threads to create intricate designs on the surface of the canvas. Her work often features depictions of women's bodies, often in provocative or sexualized poses, challenging traditional notions of female representation.

Amer's work has been exhibited in major museums and galleries around the world, including the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Pompidou Center in Paris, and the Guggenheim Museum in Berlin. She has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career, including a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant in 1999 and a UNESCO Prize in 2005. Her work has been praised for its boldness, its feminist themes, and its ability to challenge the viewer's assumptions about gender and sexuality.
