John Hubbard Rich
American, 1876 - 1954
Painter, illustrator. Born in Boston, MA on March 5, 1876. At an early age Rich moved with his family to Minneapolis and later attended art classes at night while working in the day as an illustrator for the Minneapolis Times. In 1898 he began a four-year study period at the Art Students League in New York City followed by three years at the School of the Boston Museum. While there, he was awarded a two-year traveling scholarship in Europe. Upon his return, he visited his family who had relocated to Pasadena. After returning to Boston, he taught art at the Groton School. In 1914 he and artist William Cahill moved to Los Angeles and established the School for Illustrating and Painting. He later taught at USC and for 28 years at the Otis Art Institute. In his studio in the Hollywood Hills he produced portraits, figures, still lifes and flower studies. Rich died in Los Angeles on March 30, 1954.
