Nicora Gangi
American, 1952
“My Aim as artist is to use the eyes of my heart to penetrate this concrete world and to fill the viewer with awe by rendering the sublime”. - Nicora Gangi 2011
Nicora Gangi was born in Indiana in 1952 and was educated at the Hartford Art School (Hartford,Connecticut) Montclair State College(Montclair,New Jersey) and Syracuse University (Syracuse, New York) (BFA 1974 and MFA 1976). She was a professor of art at Syracuse University for 29 years. She now resides in New York City.
In 1998, Gangi was one of three finalists chosen by Artist Magazine for their yearly competition. In 2000, she was featured in the Pastel Artist International magazine. Design magazine, CMYK, has featured her pastels in their juried Illustration section in 2000, 2001, and 2002. In 2001, she was awarded the highly prized and honorable Harris Popular Award, from the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, N.Y. In 2003 she was the featured artist in American Artist magazine. American Artist Highlights Still Life magazine featured her pastels in 2005. In April 2005 The Pastel Journal awarded Gangi the Grand Prize.
Gangi, already recognized & acclaimed for her pastels, received a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation to teach herself to paint in oil and in a very short time, she mastered the technique. In her oils just as in her pastels she uses color and value to depict dramatic light and reflections. Even more and beyond technique, Nicora captures and celebrates the beauty of anything she paints.
In September of 2011, MME Fine Art, a gallery specializing in 19th and early 20th century American paintings, expanded their reach by offering to represent Gangi. Her magnificent oils made their debut in her first New York, solo show titled, Kindred Spirits which features recent works inspired by the great Hudson River School artists and this collaboration has proved to be a successful venture.
Gangi, now residing in New York City continues to lecture regionally and nationally as a visiting artist at colleges, universities and artist’s guilds.
