Norman Cherner
American, 1920 - 1949
Norman Cherner (1920-1987) was an American designer and architect, known for his work in furniture design. He was born in Brooklyn, New York and studied at the Columbia University Fine Arts program before transferring to the School of Art and Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley.
Cherner is perhaps best known for his iconic Cherner Chair, which he designed in 1958. The chair is made from molded plywood and has a distinctive, flowing shape that has made it a classic of modern furniture design. The chair was originally produced by the Plycraft company, but went out of production in the 1970s. In the 1990s, Cherner's sons began producing the chair again under the Cherner Chair Company name.
In addition to his work in furniture design, Cherner also worked as an architect, and was involved in a number of significant projects in the United States. He worked on the design of the United Nations headquarters in New York City, and also designed a number of houses and other buildings throughout his career.
