Sol LeWitt
American, 1928 - 2007
Sol LeWitt (1928–2007) was an American artist best known for his contributions to the Minimalist and Conceptual Art movements. He is best known for his wall drawings and “structures” (a term he preferred instead of “sculpture”), which consisted of simple, geometric forms in various materials, such as metal and mirrors. LeWitt believed that the idea behind a work of art was more important than the finished product, and he was quoted as saying “the idea becomes a machine that makes the art.” He is also noted for his prolific output, having created thousands of works in his lifetime.
