Steven Alexander

American, 1953 - 2020
Steven Alexander was an American abstract painter known for his vibrant and gestural paintings. He was born in New York City in 1943 and died in 2020.

Alexander studied art at the University of California, Santa Barbara and later received his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. He was associated with the Bay Area Figurative movement and was part of a group of artists who rejected the dominant style of abstract expressionism in the 1960s.

Alexander's paintings are characterized by their bold use of color and dynamic brushwork. He often worked on large canvases and created layered and textured surfaces through the use of acrylic paint, ink, and other media. He drew inspiration from a variety of sources, including music, nature, and the urban environment.

Alexander's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and Europe, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, Spain. He was also the recipient of several awards and grants, including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship.

In addition to his career as a painter, Alexander was also a respected educator and taught at several universities and art schools, including the San Francisco Art Institute and the University of California, Davis.
