Tanden Launder
American
Tanden Launder is a self-taught, multi-medium artist based in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. His creative journey includes leather craftsmanship and historic building restoration. As a contemporary Western artist, Launder focuses on visual biographies that celebrate iconic figures of the American West. Inspired by a childhood rich in literature and without television, he draws from historical figures such as Buffalo Bill, Amelia Earhart, John Dillinger, and Sitting Bull. These influences often appear literally in his work, with pages from biographies used as collage materials in layered compositions.
Launder’s artistic process centers on “the draw”—an immediate visual hook that invites viewers in. Upon closer inspection, his works reveal intricate details like fragments of 1930s newspaper clippings, unexpected medium combinations, and hidden historical references. This layered approach creates artwork that feels grounded yet dynamic, revealing deeper stories the longer one engages. While he occasionally explores other media, his core practice remains telling stories visually, celebrating the past, and keeping the legends of the West alive.
