Romweber

American
Founded in 1879 in Batesville, Indiana, the Romweber Furniture Company is one of America’s most storied manufacturers of high-end case goods. Originally evolving from a merger of the American Furniture Company, Batesville Cabinet Company, and Batesville Coffin Company, the brand built a reputation for "old-world" craftsmanship and durability that spanned over 130 years. While their early 20th-century catalogs featured elaborate French Rococo, Chippendale, and Louis XV styles—often utilizing exotic burl wood and satinwood—the company is most famous for its mid-century transition into sophisticated, "livable" modernism.

Romweber’s most iconic contribution to design history is the Viking Oak Collection. Launched in 1935 and inspired by a research trip to Norway, the line featured solid oak construction with hand-carved Nordic folk motifs. It became the longest-running commercial furniture collection in history, staying in production until 1987. Beyond its residential popularity, Romweber’s rugged quality led to its selection for U.S. presidential homes, Saudi royalty, and prestigious American universities like Notre Dame and Purdue. Today, vintage Romweber pieces—especially those designed by Harold Schwartz—are highly prized by collectors for their sculptural form, exceptional joinery, and heavy, solid-wood integrity.
