Wim Delvoye

Belgian
Wim Delvoye is a Belgian conceptual artist known for his controversial and provocative work that explores the intersection of art, technology, and popular culture. He was born on January 14, 1965, in Wervik, Belgium, and studied at the University of Ghent and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels de la Cambre in Brussels.

Delvoye's work spans a wide range of media, including sculpture, installation, drawing, and photography. He is perhaps best known for his intricate laser-cut steel sculptures, which feature ornate patterns inspired by Gothic architecture and traditional tattoo designs. He has also created works using living animals, such as tattooed pigs and a cloaca machine that simulates the human digestive system.

Delvoye's work has been exhibited widely in galleries and museums around the world, including at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. He has also created public art installations, such as a series of giant steel sculptures for the city of Beijing. Delvoye's work has generated controversy for its sometimes graphic and unsettling subject matter, but he is widely recognized as a significant figure in contemporary art.
