This book was the catalog for a major exhibit at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (now called The Penn Museum), curated by J. J. Brody, in 1990. The Penn Museum has one of the largest and most important collections of American Indian art in the world. Their pottery collection includes about 3500 pots, many of which are rare. This exhibit and book served the museum well, getting information and photos out to the world about the museum's amazing holdings.

Brody gives an easily read and thorough introduction to Southwestern pottery, beginning with Prehistoric pottery and continuing through the Historic period. He ends his presentation of material as the 20th century begins. The text is accompanied by beautiful photographs of the pottery he is discussing as well as of the environment and documents of the period.

This is a very important book for anyone who wants to understand the development of Native American Pottery in the Southwest as well as for scholars who will want to view the very important pots that are included in the book.
