Description
Niels Kjaerbolling, (Danish, 1806-71)
Forgog tile n Afbildning af Danske Sangfugle [Folio of Images of Danish Songbirds]
First edition: 1828.
Oblong 4to, bound in contemporary paper covered boards, spine renewed with cloth.
Provenance: Saxhof Collection
Important manuscript of Danish Birds consisting of 21 original drawings in color and 19 handwritten pages.
$38,000.
Niels Kjaerbolling (1806-71) was the founder of the Zoological Garden at Copenhagen and published in 1847-1851 the first complete account of the birds of Denmark, “Ornithologica Danica,” which had a marked influence on the study of Danish birds. This very early collection of drawings is probably influenced by Naumann’s “Naturgeschichte der Vogel Deutschlanbds” of which the first volume appeared in 1820. However, Kjaerbolling explicitly states that he has drawn the birds after nature and supplied with his own observations. The manuscript is highly important in documenting the very early beginning of Kjaerbolling’s career as an ornithologist. -
