    Account of Burnes' British commercial mission to the Court of the Emir of Kabul in 1837-38. The Mission was a failure and in 1839 Burnes re-entered Kabul with the invading British troops. In 1841 Burnes was murdered and some 4500 troops and more than 12000 camp-followers were killed in 1842 whilst attempting a retreat to India. 'Includes a good deal of information about both the land and the people of Afghanistan, their customs and way of life' (Ghani).

    Second edition. 8vo, xii, 398 pp., engraved portrait, 11 plates including 7 lithographs contemporary polished calf gilt, green morocco lettering piece, light toning to tile and frontis., a very good copy.
