1930s Amsterdam School Rare Copper Mantel Clock with Mauthe Movement

$ 4,200
  • Description
    1930s Amsterdam School Copper Mantel Clock with Mauthe Movement

    This extraordinary copper mantel clock is a rare example of Amsterdam School design from the 1930s, a movement that merged expressive architecture with the applied arts in the Netherlands. Its distinctive form and sculptural silhouette reflect influences from architects such as Piet Kramer and the design workshop of Winkelman & van der Bijl. The dramatically curved and stepped body, forged from finely drawn copper, captures the dynamic tension between industrial power and artistic craftsmanship that defined the Dutch Art Deco period. Looks like it came out of the Tuchinski theater an inspiration of Amsterdam School of Design (see the link below).

    The clock face is equally remarkable, featuring stylized numerals set within a deeply embossed metal dial radiating from a central starburst motif. The clock’s robust Art Deco lines are echoed in its horizontal striations and aerodynamic handle, details that contribute to its strong architectural presence. It houses a mechanical movement by Mauthe, striking a loud, resonant bell on the hour and half hour, with an operational run of approximately five to six days.

    Mechanically, this timepiece remains in excellent working condition. The inner workings reveal a classic Mauthe pendulum mechanism with the original bell and chime coil intact, ensuring reliable function. A rare and collectible example of Amsterdam School clock design, this piece bridges the decorative arts and modernist ideology, making it an exceptional addition to any Art Deco interior or collection.
