French, Late 19th Century
Height 45cm, width 32cm, depth 15cm
This beautiful porcelain mantel clock is designed in the shape of a shield which is propped up on a gilt bronze (ormolu) easel support, composed of two shields and a staff topped by a helmet. The porcelain shield is painted, in the upper left corner, with a trophy of arms motif, composed of a sword, lance, two shields and a plumed helmet. The centre of the shield features a circular parcel gilt dial which is inscribed with black Arabic Numerals within white medallions. Below this, there is a painted scene which depicts two medieval knights fighting in an arena, observed by three figures standing before a castle.
The clock is signed on its reverse 'BREVETE S.G.D.G. LEB' in a shield-shaped profile. -
