Description
Very large antique Louis XV style mantel clock by Beurdeley and Raingo Frères
French, Late 19th Century
Height 98cm, width 49cm, depth 24cm
This magnificent Louis XV style mantel clock, masterfully crafted from gilded ormolu, is a testament to the expertise of Beurdeley, one of France’s most celebrated makers of fine furniture and decorative arts. Founded in 1818, the prestigious firm gained international recognition, frequently showcasing its exquisite craftsmanship at world’s fairs throughout the 19th century, where it received numerous prestigious accolades.
Adding to the clock’s historical and artistic significance, its intricate timekeeping mechanism was produced by Raingo Frères, a distinguished French clockmaking firm. Known for their precision and superior craftsmanship, Raingo Frères supplied timepieces to Europe’s most elite circles, including Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie.
The elaborately cast ormolu case embodies the elegance of the Louis XV era, featuring a wealth of intricate details. At its pinnacle, a beautifully sculpted Cupid figure gracefully holds an arrow, symbolising love and devotion. Below, the case is adorned with luxurious ornamentation, culminating in four finely rendered ram heads, positioned at each corner.
Dominating the front is a striking enamel clock face, showcasing meticulously hand-painted blue Roman numerals, each encased in an ornate gilded frame. Below, a sculpted reclining female figure, draped in flowing fabric, enhances the grandeur of the design. Behind her, additional decorative elements seamlessly integrate with the overall composition, emphasizing the richness of the piece.
The clock is supported by four scrolling feet, each adorned with cherubic busts, further exemplifying the superior craftsmanship of this exceptional timepiece. The ormolu bears the mark ‘B.Y.’ for Beurdeley, while the clock dial is signed ‘Raingo Frères’ and the clock mechanism ‘Vincenti & Cie’.
A masterpiece of French 19th century decorative art, this mantel clock is an exquisite statement piece, perfect for adding a touch of opulence to any refined interior.
