Description
Large antique French Louis XV style patinated and gilt bronze clock set
French, 19th Century
Clock: Height 99cm, width 83cm, depth 32cm
Torchères: Height 113cm, width 33cm, depth 28cm
This stunning late 19th century French clock set exemplifies the grandeur of the Louis XV style, known for its graceful curves, ornate detailing, and playful elegance that defined French decorative arts between 1730 and 1760.
At the heart of the ensemble, the clock case is exquisitely adorned with flowing C-scrolls, sweeping S-curves, and delicate acanthus leaves, all hallmarks of the Louis XV aesthetic. Its glass-covered dial, featuring black Roman numerals, is encircled by finely sculpted floral and scrollwork embellishments, emphasizing the exceptional artistry of the piece. Above, an elaborate draped ribbon tied floral garland adds further opulence. Flanking the timepiece are two patinated bronze cherubs - one carrying wheat and the other holding flowers - symbolising abundance and prosperity. A central shell motif enhances the case’s decorative richness, while beneath it, a finely cast female mask is framed by pierced ormolu panels, adding to its regal appeal.
Complementing the clock are a pair of torchères, designed with the same intricate craftsmanship and decorative unity. Each torchère features a patinated bronze cherub seated on an ornate, raised plinth that mirrors the style of the clock case. The cherubs hold elegantly sculpted cornucopias, a classical emblem of plenty, each topped with an unusual and striking frosted glass flame-shaped shade. Designed as mirror reflections of one another, the torchères create a visually captivating arrangement, with the cherubs appearing to gaze toward each other.
Every inch of this remarkable three-piece set is richly detailed, showcasing the unparalleled skill of French artisans and the timeless beauty of the Louis XV period. A magnificent display of fine craftsmanship, this clock set makes a distinguished and refined addition to any collection or interior. -
