Description
Neoclassical style malachite and gilt bronze mounted clock set
French, 19th Century
Clock: Height 48cm, width 61cm, depth 25cm
Candelabra: Height 72cm, width 36cm, depth 32cm
This three-piece clock and candelabra set is formed of malachite and is fitted with gilt and patinated bronze mounts. The malachite base of the clock stands on gilt bronze bun feet. The base supports the gilt bronze clock drum, which is mounted to one side and flows like molten gold over the top of the base. This overflow imitates earthen ground, complete with cast leaves, branches, and other natural forms. Upon this earthen bed lounges a patinated bronze putto, his elbow atop the clock drum. The white enamel dial is inscribed with Roman numerals.
The pair of candelabra is decorated in a similar fashion to the central mantel clock, particularly the bases, which conform in manner to the base of the clock. The stem of each candelabrum takes the guise of a patinated bronze putto. Each putto supports its candelabrum’s head, formed from seven scrolling gilt bronze branches.
