Description
Antique Empire period gilt bronze clock by Pierre-Philippe Thomire
French, Early 19th Century
Height 45cm, width 29cm, depth 19cm
This superb gilt bronze clock, created by the renowned French craftsman Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751–1843), exemplifies the refined artistry of the early 19th century. A master of patinated and gilded bronze ornamentation, Thomire was celebrated for his exceptional decorative works, and this timepiece is a striking testament to his skill.
The clock is set upon a gracefully curved oval base, embellished with delicate floral swag reliefs and elevated by four finely sculpted feet. At the heart of the design, a beautifully detailed scene unfolds - two young boys, attired in classical robes, sit across from each other, deeply engrossed in their books. Between them stands a rectangular bookcase. Its lower shelves are filled with neatly arranged volumes, while the upper section houses the clock face. Featuring bold black Roman numerals and elegant hands, the timepiece is further adorned with twin oval rosette mounts, a finely cast laurel garland, and an intricately detailed grape cluster. Symbolising the pursuit of knowledge, this composition reflects a popular motif in 19th century decorative arts.
On the reverse, the base bears the inscription ‘THOMIRE A PARIS’.
A superb example of Empire-style craftsmanship, this antique clock would make a remarkable addition to any collection.
