Description
This impressive “Grapevine” Mantel Clock is one of the more rare pieces of Tiffany Studios’ “Etched Metal and Glass” Desk Set, one of Tiffany’s most popular sets, remaining highly sought after by modern Tiffany collectors. While the “Etched Metal and Glass” Desk Set was among Tiffany Studios’ earliest Desk Set designs, this particular clock model was likely introduced around 1910.
The arched case of the clock features a pierced metal filigree depicting grape clusters, large, veined grape leaves and overlapping vines with the original gold patina, mounted above panels of opalescent Tiffany glass in marbled shades of cream and golden amber. The arched top of this clock is an unusual design element, incorporating curved panels of Tiffany glass likely produced specifically for this model.
The circular white porcelain clock face, marked the Tiffany & Co., features Roman numerals indicating the hours in black and Arabic numerals indicating every quarter hour in red. Two delicate arms with pierced circular details form the minute hand and hour hand. A hinged door at the back allows access to the clock works.
This rare example of Tiffany Studios metalwork is stamped with firm’s marks and model number.
