Antique Carved Khmer Sandstone Head of a Male Diety Cambodia
-
Description
A carved red sandstone head of the Angkor period style, circa 12-13th century.. The iconic facial features is reminiscent to the "Smiling God King" found widely in Bayon Temple of Angkor Thom. The widely set almond-shaped eyes are accentuated with flared nostrils and full lips. The crown is topped with a lingam-shape hair knot with detailed carving, suggesting the deity likely represents Shiva. Sandstone was typically used for sculpture and statue in Bayon as it was available from surrounding Kulen Mountains.
The height of the head itself measures 9.5h by 7.5w by 6.25d. It was fitted onto a modern wooden base that totals a height of 16 inches. Estate piece in original condition and purchased by the owner in Bangkok in the mid-1960's. -
