Description
Gold, precious stone, and enamel frame in the manner of Fabergé
Russian, 20th Century
Frame: Height 30.5cm, width 24cm, depth 20cm
Case: Height 5.5cm, width 35cm, depth 35cm
This picture frame is designed in the style of Fabergé. The frame is rectangular in profile with chamfered corners. The surface of the frame is profusely ornamented with guilloché enamel in a bright blue, the interior and exterior edge of the enamel being bounded by gold edging. This edging features geometrical and foliate motifs; complementary motifs, also wrought from gold, are mounted upon the guilloché enamel that defines the surface of the frame. These gold motifs are distinctly classical in nature: Grecian sphinxes and laurels, for instance, ornament the top and sides of the frame, the motifs occasionally inset with gemstones.
The frame contains a picture of a seated female figure, held by a blue mount and set below bevelled glass. The frame is accompanied by a fitted box, the interior velvet lined and inscribed with the mark of Fabergé.
