19th C Gustavian style Flower Container

$ 3,400
  • Description
    An elegant 19th century Swedish Neoclassical jardinière, executed in the enduring Gustavian taste, with a beautifully time-softened painted surface and richly carved giltwood ornament.
    Of refined rectangular form, the body is articulated with a rhythmic series of vertical fluted panels set against a deep green ground, lending both architectural structure and visual depth. The façade and sides are adorned with finely carved floral swags, draped in classical garland form and centered by rosette medallions—an iconic decorative motif inspired by late 18th century Swedish interiors influenced by French Neoclassicism.
    The gilded elements have developed a warm, mellow patina, contrasting beautifully with the softly worn painted surface. The overall palette—muted whites, aged gilt, and deep green—creates a sophisticated and highly versatile decorative presence.
    Raised on a stepped plinth base, the jardinière retains its original interior, showing expected wear from use, which adds to its authenticity and character. The scale and linear form make it particularly well suited as a centerpiece for a dining table, console, or installed beneath a window as a planted arrangement.
    A decorative object of strong presence, this piece reflects the continued popularity of the Gustavian style throughout the 19th century, offering the elegance of the earlier period with slightly more robust execution.
